Opening Your Pool for Spring in Australia: Which Chemicals to Add First & What to Test

Opening your pool properly in preparation for warmer months sets the foundation for crystal-clear water and hassle-free maintenance.
The right approach can mean the difference between spending hours trying to get your water clear or hours of fun in the sun.
Before Adding Anything: Clean First
Before reaching for any chemicals, you'll need to prepare your pool surfaces. Remove debris, brush walls and floors, and clean your filter system.
This physical cleaning ensures chemicals can work effectively once added to the water.
Step 1: Test Your Water Thoroughly
Start with a comprehensive water test to understand what you're working with. Test for:
pH levels (target: 7.2-7.6)
Total alkalinity (target: 80-120 ppm)
Chlorine levels (target: 1-3 ppm)
Calcium hardness (target: 200-400 ppm)
Cyanuric acid levels (target: 30-50 ppm)
Use a reliable test kit or strips, and record your results. If you're uncertain about interpreting the results, bring a water sample to your local pool shop for professional analysis.
The Correct Chemical Addition Sequence
Adding pool chemicals in the proper order prevents reactions and ensures each product works effectively. Here's the sequence we recommend:
1. Adjust Calcium Hardness First
If your calcium hardness is below 200 ppm, add calcium chloride before anything else. Low calcium can cause corrosion to pool surfaces and equipment. Add the required amount with your pump running, and allow it to circulate for at least 4-6 hours before proceeding.
2. Balance Total Alkalinity
Alkalinity acts as a buffer for pH, so it needs to be adjusted before pH levels. If alkalinity is low, add sodium bicarbonate (bicarb soda). If it's too high, use muriatic acid or dry acid. Let this circulate for several hours and retest before moving forward.
3. Adjust pH Levels
Once alkalinity is balanced, adjust your pH. Add soda ash to increase pH or muriatic acid to decrease it. Aim for the lower end of the range (7.2-7.4) as subsequent chemical additions may raise it slightly. Allow 4-6 hours circulation time.
4. Add Chlorine Stabiliser
If your cyanuric acid levels are low (below 30 ppm), add stabiliser now. This protects chlorine from being rapidly degraded by Australia's intense UV rays. For saltwater pools, you'll add salt at this stage instead.
5. Add Your Sanitiser
Now you can add chlorine (liquid, granular, or tablets) or activate your salt water chlorinator. Ensure levels reach the recommended range for your pool type.
6. Apply Long-Term Algae Protection
This is where our Pool Blocks or Pool Drops Plus come in. These products provide months of protection against green, mustard, and blackspot algae. Unlike standard algaecides that only last a few weeks, our formulations deliver long-term results:
Pool Blocks: Add one 300g block per month to your skimmer basket. The slow-release formula treats your pool for an entire month, even as chlorine levels fluctuate.
Pool Drops Plus: Add once per season (every 3-5 months) for continuous protection. This double-strength liquid algaecide is particularly effective in concrete, pebblecrete, and marblesheen pools where pH tends to run higher.
By eliminating algae cells and spores, these products reduce chlorine consumption by up to 50%, saving you money while keeping water sparkling clear.
7. Shock Treatment
Finally, perform a shock treatment to oxidise any remaining contaminants and boost chlorine levels. This eliminates any dormant algae and organic matter that accumulated over winter.
Use a non-chlorine shock (potassium monopersulfate) or chlorine-based shock, depending on your pool's needs.

Critical Timing and Compatibility Warnings
Wait Between Additions
Allow at least 30 minutes between adding different chemicals, and ideally several hours for major adjustments like pH and alkalinity.
Never Mix Chemicals Directly
Always add chemicals separately to the pool water while the circulation is running. Mixing concentrated chemicals can cause dangerous reactions.
Evening Applications Work Best
Add chemicals in the evening when possible. Our harsh Australian sun rapidly degrades chlorine during the day, reducing effectiveness.
Salt Water Chlorinator Caution
When adding Pool Drops Plus to saltwater pools, either add the product around the pool edges furthest from the filter intakes, or turn off your chlorinator for the day to ensure proper dilution before the product passes through the cell.
Seasonal Considerations for Australian Pools
Spring opening in Australia presents unique challenges. After cooler months, your pool may have developed algae despite winter treatments.
Our climate also means UV degradation starts earlier and lasts longer than in many other regions.
Consider these spring-specific factors:
Start your opening process 2-3 weeks before you plan to swim
Expect to run your filtration system longer as temperatures rise
Monitor chemical levels more frequently during the first month
Be prepared for rapid algae growth if any step is missed
When Things Don't Go to Plan
If your pool water is cloudy or green after opening, don't panic. Follow this rescue sequence:
1. Test water thoroughly
2. Shock the pool with a chlorine-based shock
3. Balance pH and alkalinity
4. Add Pool Blocks or Pool Drops Plus for long-term algae control
5. Run your filter continuously until the water clears
6. Brush walls and vacuum regularly

Maintaining Your Pool After Opening
Once your pool is open and balanced, maintain it with:
Weekly water testing
Regular brushing and vacuuming
Consistent filtration (6-8 hours daily in summer)
Monthly Pool Blocks additions or seasonal Pool Drops Plus treatments
Prompt debris removal
Why Long-Term Algae Protection Matters
Standard algaecides provide only short-term protection, typically lasting just a few weeks. This is the number one reason most algicide products fail. Algae grows slowly and dies slowly, requiring several months of consistent treatment for effective control.
Our Pool Blocks and Pool Drops Plus are formulated to be "made stronger to last longer," providing the extended treatment period necessary for superior results.
They work by delivering a steady, low level of active copper ions (0.4-0.8 ppm) that algae cells readily absorb, eliminating all forms of algae, including stubborn blackspot.
